Once upon a time, Persephone was cavorting in a meadow with her Nymph companions when Hades spotted her and "fell in love". He stole her off to the Underworld to be his bride. Her mother, Demeter, and Hekate searched throughout the world bearing torches. Demeter was furious when she learned that Zeus was complicit - and she refused to let the earth bear fruit until Persephone was returned to her.
However, Persephone had been tricked into eating a handful of pomegranate seeds and so was forced to strike a deal. She would forever spend a part of the year with her husband in the Underworld, and return to her mother the other half. Her annual return to the earth in Spring was marked by flowering and rebirth of fruits and grain on the earth. Thus began the seasons on earth.
